![]() ![]() Vinegar is a mixture of acetic acid and water. In this experiment, you will determine the concentration of acetic acid, HC 2H 3O 2 in commercial vinegar. The most common type of titration is the acid-base titration. You will use mechanical stirring in this experiment. Either manual swirling of the beaker or mechanical stirring can be used. ![]() It is important to keep a titration well mixed, so the titrant and analyte can contact each other and react rapidly. Indicators are chosen so the endpoint is very close to the equivalence point. Since the color change is near but not exactly at the equivalence point, the point at which the color change occurs is called the endpoint. The indicator, which is a substance that changes color near the equivalence point, is added to the analyte solution. The equivalence point can also be determined visually with an indicator. The pH can be monitored during the titration with a pH electrode and the equivalence point identified as the point of most rapid pH change. For this first lab, you will need your titrations to agree to within 0.50 mL.įigure 1 : Titration Setup The equivalence point can be determined by two methods. ![]() With practice, one can dispense fractions of a drop of titrant and control the procedure well enough that replicated titrations agree within 0.10 mL. The delivery of the titrant is adjusted with the stopcock on the buret. Usually, the volume readings are estimated to the nearest 0.01 mL. This is called the equivalence point, at which the volume of titrant delivered by the buret is read. Titrant is added to the analyte until the stoichiometric volume of titrant has been added. A buret, which contains the titrant, is calibrated so the volume of solution that it delivers can be determined with high accuracy and precision. The experimental setup is shown in Figure 1. The concentration of the analyte is determined from the concentration and volume of titrant and the stoichiometry of the reaction between them. The stoichiometric volume of one reactant of known concentration, the titrant, that is required to react with another reactant of unknown concentration, the analyte, is measured. A titration is an analytical procedure in which a reaction is run under carefully controlled conditions. The very common and simple technique of titration is demonstrated in this experiment. Introduction Many laboratories analyze consumer products to determine accuracy in the labeling of the product. 4 To calculate the amount of analyte present from the result of a titration. ![]()

Now, he and his fellow Magi are world-weary and welcome the end. At the end, the speaker is left feeling jaded and lost by the advent of Christ: he wonders whether Christ’s birth has been a good thing, since his arrival in the world signalled the death of his religion and the religion of his people. But he fails to pick up on what they foreshadow we, however, living in a Christian (or even a post-Christian) society, can read their significance. These details are significant not least because the speaker is a priest or astrologer, someone who is trained to look for significance in the things around him, to read and interpret signs as symbols or omens. Note also how the imagery foreshadows Christ’s later life and crucifixion: the three trees suggesting Christ’s crucifixion, between two thieves on the mountain the vine, to which Jesus will liken himself the pieces of silver foreshadowing the thirty pieces of silver Judas Iscariot will receive for betraying him the wine-skins foreshadowing the wine that Jesus would beseech his disciples to drink in memory of him at the Last Supper. There are several possible reasons why Eliot would have chosen to leave Jesus out of the poem, but they all raise additional questions. Is this because this part of the story is familiar to us, but the Magi themselves are not – or specifically, how the Magi would have felt about seeing their deeply-held beliefs cast into doubt by this new Messiah? Yet surely one way to convince us of the impact of this new-born deity on the lives of these Persian astrologers would have been to show us how they reacted when faced with the baby Christ. Second, the actual nativity scene itself is elided from the narrative: the Magi travel to the place where Christ is to be found, locate it, and then suddenly the speaker of the poem is looking back on the journey years later as an old man. There are several things which are odd about Eliot’s poem.įirst, for a poem titled ‘Journey of the Magi’, there is no mention of the star which – the Gospels and a million children’s nativity plays tell us – guided the Magi to the spot where Christ lay in a manger. ![]() ![]() ![]() Trash is everywhere, as are animals such as free-ranging cows, as well as goats, pigs and dogs eating the trash. ![]() Even if you try to mentally prepare, the lack of hygiene along the river can be startling, with people using it for everything, including cleaning clothes, bathing, drinking and bodily functions. River cruises in the area are still relatively new and the Westerners who go are a source of extreme interest to the people who live along the river. The best attraction is the people you'll see and interact with. Excursions are run to temples and colonial buildings, but these are really beside the point. Instead of grand monuments, the Ganges River cruise focuses on the human side of India. Almost all itineraries supplied by Western operators include a Golden Triangle land tour - visiting Delhi, Agra and Jaipur - with the river cruise portion of the trip to see major monuments like the Taj Mahal and other UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This article attempts to present a macro view of the Ganges and provide a broader context encompassing its historical, spiritual, cultural and socioeconomic attributes and considerations which often remain untouched in scientific papers.Spiritual, chaotic, beautiful colors, devastating poverty: a river cruise on India's Ganges will expose you to the country's extremes. By supporting agriculture, animal husbandry and fisheries, tourism, river-based trade and transport, the river contributes significantly to the livelihood, food and nutritional security of about one-third of Indian and two-thirds of the Bangladeshi population. The Ganges and its tributaries provide a perennial source of irrigation to a large area, in addition to recharging the groundwater table all along their course. The Ganges basin, with its fertile soil, is a significant contributor to the agricultural economies of both India and Bangladesh. Its extensive basin accounts for one-fourth of India's water resources and is home to more than 407 million Indians, or some one-third of India's population. The Ganges alone drains an area of over a million square kilometers. ![]() The history of Ganga in nurturing culture and civilizations is appreciated through fostering native culture in its basin, shifting of the Indus-Sarasvati basin civilization into its fold, and promoting integration of cultures to develop Indian civilization. In fact, respect for Ganga is a part of Indian identity and the very symbol of Indian culture. These are amply reflected in such ancient Indian scriptures as: Vedas, Puranas, Mahabharata, Ramayana and several others. The very special faith and respect for the River Ganges in India are as old as Indian culture itself. She is the centre of social and religious tradition in the Indian sub-continent and particularly sacred in Hinduism.
